RM: Do you do all of your own tuning, or is your roadie able to do some of it? Well, of course, everybody gets burned, but I was like a machine out there. **When you started your solo career, was that the beginning of the end for Journey? [laughs] Of course! AD: When I started off listening to music as a child, I always followed the lead. Dunbar was asked by Kantner to leave in 1982, with Donny Baldwin taking his place in September. I didn't want to do that, so I decided to leave. Shortly after that, I disbanded Retaliation and formed Blue Whale, but I could never get the same brass section to stay in the band. And a lot of time spent together can chew on a friendship. I wanted to play violin when I was seven, but my parents wouldn't buy me one because they thought I would just waste the time and money. When I get involved in something I like to keep it going, day by day. Two summers ago I was asked by Sony to oversee the remastering of the entire catalog. But at the same time, the difference between a voice and fingers, or hands, is neurotic at best. They finally gave up and got me one, but by that time it was too late. Which in those days was not good. I didn't have that under my belt. I just thought it was part of the aging process. *** Eventually I got bored with the screeching sound of the violin. And I think that proving myself was something that went on for quite some time with the band members. I didnt need anything else, as far as an opinion on the show. If you play the bass and snare at the same time, you 'llfind that the snare drum sound disappears. AD: Tone quality , more than anything else. I sing with myself all the time I'm playing. I went down there and sat in with him, and boy, it was horrible! Like, Gee whiz, you have a Lamborghini, so you mustve been big. I didnt understand that. If I did I might start breaking drums. This past weekend I began my re-read of all Carl Sagan's books + his So it felt freeing at some level to be a free agent, in 98, cause the industry was really changing, and the Internet was becoming a big thing, and I thought, Gee, the futures kinda wide open. And then [laughs] then I just got this unbelievable freaky drive, which shows the neurosis of the singer-songwriter. I couldn't leave the people in my band just to do some wandering around the country, although it would have led to the Led Zeppelin gig, which was offered to me as well. I was riding my Harley a lot, all throughout the San Joaquin Valley. I would have neverI would have never thought that was gonna happen. RM: I noticed you using traditional grip at times. I'd like to know what pedal he used. That's basically what it's all about. Same for the bass. Most of them are in L.A. RM: How did your professional career develop? AD: I am. Yknow? I look at it like this: as long as the solo went down, well-that's fine. His playing always has a bit of a flair to it, but I think he's always a supportive musician and he doesn't overplay.
